Canal Holidays Guide to the River Wey
Established
as a commercial waterway in 1651, the River Wey was used to transport
a variety of goods, including gunpowder used in the Napoleonic Wars.
The National Trust ensures that this lovely waterway
is preserved for future generations. Our base on the River Wey (base
54) is in Guildford, an attractive old market town with a castle,
cobbled high street, cathedral and theatre. Just 30 miles south-west
of London, it's an excellent place to start and finsh your holiday.
The River
Wey is linked to the Basingstoke Canal (only suitable for experienced
boaters) and the River Thames. In a week it is possible to get
to the attractions of the River Thames, including Windsor and
Hampton Court before returning to the base. You can even cruise
to Oxford in a two week cruise.
