Canal Boat Holiday Base Information - Base 17 - Four Counties and Cheshire Rings

Location

Base 17 is in the northwest of England south of Manchester. This long-established boat base offers well designed and equipped narrowboats. Crewe railway station is 7 miles away, Manchester Airport is 20 miles away and it is just 2 miles from junction 18 of the M6.

Situated on both the Cheshire Ring and the Four Counties Ring this base offers both options as one week cruises. You can also cruise to the Llangollen Canal. In a short break travel to the Anderton Lift or the scenic countryside southwards towards Sandbach or Barbridge and Nantwich.

Four Counties Ring: 109 miles 94 locks 50 hours
A popular and almost completely rural route through Cheshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire, including the 2 mile long Harecastle Tunnel! A pleasant route and not difficult.

Chester and Ellesmere Port: 52 miles 36 locks to Chester 24 hours
Cruise past the 13th Century Beeston Castle to the World Heritage site of Chester, with its medieval 2-tier shopping 'Rows', its riverside, zoo, and walk around the Roman city walls. An easy, relaxed and pleasant route, ideal for beginners and with plenty of interest for families.

Llangollen Canal: 112 miles 50 locks 47 hours
The most famous canal trip, culminating in remarkable scenery and the passage of the 120 feet high Pontcysyllte aqueduct. A totally rural route - slow going outwards against the water flow but a lot quicker coming back. For more information and maps see the Llangollen Canal guide

Cheshire Ring: 100 miles 92 locks 48 hours
