Canal Boat Holiday Base Information - Base 54
Base 54 is in Guildford, Surrey on the River Wey. It is run by a family business established in 1897 offering good service and a modern fleet equipped to the highest standards. It is just 30 miles southwest of London with good road and rail links. It is just 25 miles away from Heathrow Airport.
3 or 4 day short break
Cruise the length of the River Wey passing through villages such as Godalming, Guildford, Send, Ripley, Pyrford and Weybridge.
1 Week (extra licence required for River Thames)
River Wey and River Thames to Windsor or Hampton Court and return.
Hampton Court Palace - promises a magical journey back through 500 years of history. Family trails and the famous 'Maze'. Open all year round except Christmas & Boxing Day.
Thorpe Park - great rides for all the family as well as lake and farm area. Open Easter to beginning November.
Runnymede Park - A relaxing riverside park giving access to local countryside walks. The Park is opposite Runnymede Meadow and the memorials commemorating the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215, John K Kennedy and the Commonwealth Air Forces.
Windsor - Shops, restaurants and riverside gardens with a good play area for small children. Eton High Street and College.
Windsor Castle - Probably the best known symbol of the British Monarchy. The only Royal residence which has been in continuous use since William the Conqueror.
Legoland - A great day out for families with younger children. Over 50 fantastic rides and attractions. 2 miles from Windsor Town Centre. Bus Services to the Park from stops close to Windsor and Eton Riverside railway stations. Open from Easter to beginning of November.
10 or 11 day cruise
River Wey to Byfleet and onto the Basingstoke Canal. (extra licence required and subject to water levels) or River Wey and River Thames to Henley and return.
2 Week cruise
River Wey and River Thames to Oxford or an energetic cruise to reading and then along the Kennet & Avon Canal to Newbury and return (extra licence for K & A Canal)
The Basingstoke Canal dates back to the 1790's and in 1991, 32 of its 37 miles from the River Wey at Woodham to Greywell near Basingstoke were re-opened for navigation. Experienced crews who would like to visit the Basingstoke Canal must prebook their passage with the Canal Owners and purchase a visitors licence at least 1 month prior to the holiday as visitor numbers may be limited.
