Boating holidays through historic York
on the Yorkshire River Ouse
The wide waters of the Rivers Ouse and Ure provide easy and
relaxed cruising on this enchanting peaceful waterway passing
through beautiful countryside to the east of the Yorkshire Dales.
Our base at medieval York is in the centre of this easy cruising
area.
Historic
York is a major attraction with a particularly attractive waterfront
and delightful visitors' moorings adjacent to Lendal Bridge
in the heart of the city. York has so much to offer the
holidaymaker including the world famous Minster, National Railway
Museum, the Jorvik Centre, a modern shopping centre, theatres,
restaurants and pubs of great character.

Between the lower limit of cruising at Naburn Locks and the
upstream end of navigation on the Ripon Canal, there is a rural
and unspoilt 'Out and Back' cruise of approximately 76 miles
with only 6 locks (which you operate yourself). The stretch
around York and Bishopthorpe is lock free for 34 miles out and
back.
The Ripon Canal is the most northerly inter-connected canal
in the English system and now you can cruise within a short
walk of the centre of Ripon, with its Cathedral and busy shopping
centre.
 You
may hear the famous Ripon Hornblower who maintains a 1,100 year
old tradition by sounding his horn at the Market Place obelisk
at 9pm every evening, 'Setting the Watch'.
Spend hours in the cathedral cities of Ripon and York, each
with its own racecourse, and the riverside villages in between.
Along the scenic river-banks are several charming riverside
pubs and even a couple of stately homes.
Our base is an attractive boatyard with restaurant situated
in the delightful village of Bishopthorpe just 2 miles south
of York. Adjacent to the base is Bishopthorpe Palace, home to
the Archbishop of York.
The
River Ouse fleet of cruisers sleeps from 2-4 up to 8 people.
They are available for weekly starts from Tuesday, Friday or
Saturday. Short breaks are also available from Monday
afternoon to Friday morning, Friday afternoon to Monday morning,
Tuesday afternoon to Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon to
Tuesday morning.
